IBIS Middle East 2019: Strategic Sustainability

May 2019 | Al Mazroui
The sixth IBIS (International Bodyshop Industry Symposium) for the Middle East was held in Dubai on the 12th and 13th of March 2019. It brought together leaders of the motor vehicle accident repair industry from across the Gulf. The discussions were crucial to address the key challenges faced by the industry in a constantly evolving market.

Determining the Right Diagnosis

The conference received the support of IBIS lead partner Axalta and partners Al Mazroui Trading & General Services - Paints Division, Audatex, 3M, Spanesi and Automechanica Dubai. The theme of the symposium was ‘”Strategic Sustainability”. The idea was to discuss on how to continually improve performances and meet common goals such as increasing productivity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy use and waste.

Several key note speakers were present, including the famous motivational conference speaker Jeff Smith aka the “KPI Guy”. He is regarded as the most successful author on Key Performance Indicators.  Jeff Smith identified “being a good estimator” as the key to success and the difference between a good and a great bodyshop. Indeed, according to the trainer and business strategist, over- or underestimating can highly impact profitability in the automotive accident repair industry.

In this spirit, Al Mazroui Trading & General Services - Paints Division, a company of the Al Mazroui Group, exhibited “Touch” the Spanesi universal electronic measuring system, approved by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Touch allows quick and effective diagnosis of damaged vehicles. It certifies the correct method of repair and includes the ability to measure mechanical parts. Its modernity and its vast database make this system a market leader in its class.

Thriving Sustainably

The company also displayed an-eye catching custom painted air brushed Mini Cooper supplied by Abu Dhabi Motors. The images were painted using Al Mazroui supplied Spies Hecker automotive refinishing products (see the above image). Spies Hecker is one of the global refinish coating brands from Axalta, the headline partner for this symposium. The latter used the event to highlight its range of sustainable coating solutions and technology innovations to meet the current environmental and social challenges. Jim Muse, the company’s vice president of global refinish sales, said that “sustainability has been fundamental to Axalta’s growth and success for over 150 years.”

When referring to sustainability, Axalta means a wide range of environmental, social, governance and economic responsibilities that can arise from its operations. The American company manages its facilities in ways that are intended to minimise the impact of its operations across 49 manufacturing centres with environment, health and safety protocols. Moreover, its coatings are designed to serve the sustainability goals of its customers, helping their products last longer, enabling their operations to run more efficiently, and providing ways to save energy, reduce waste and increase productivity. Axalta also supports environmental stewardship programs and nonprofit organisations around the globe. For instance, it has partnered with the Indian S.M. Sehgal Foundation to construct a 3-million-liter capacity pond in the drought-ridden Bhooriya Baas village, in the Alwar district.

The organisers of IBIS consider that market education is a must and are looking forward to expanding the discussion, both at IBIS 2020 and through a number of smaller forums taking place this summer. IBIS says it is “committed to building a sustainable repair ecosystem and supporting all the players in the aftersales market.”
