The iconic “
Victoria” is one of Herend’s oldest and most recognisable designs. The glistening snow-white porcelain, finished with a richly gilded edge, is decorated in a medley of close to a hundred colourful butterflies and flower sprigs. This pattern is one of the main reasons behind the brand’s success and it owes a lot to the eponymous British monarch. Its last version was released this year for the celebration of her 200th birthday.
A Royal PatternLondon, 1851. Great Britain was preparing for the first Great Exhibition. Meanwhile in the small Hungarian town of Herend, a new and delightful pattern inspired by Chinese porcelain was being elaborated. Mór Fischer, owner of the Herend Porcelain Manufactory, decided to send this new work of art to the grandiose event.
During one of her visits to the international fair,
Queen Victoria fell in love with the hand-painted porcelain, decorated with stylised butterflies and blossoming branches. She purchased a complete set. As a tribute, Mór Fischer named the pattern after her and it is still identified with the brand to this day.
Ever since the Great Exhibition, the Hungarian porcelain manufactory has been linked to the British Royal Family. Several generations of Windsors have enjoyed its dinner and tea services. For instance, Queen Elizabeth II has bought Herend porcelain for her family on several occasions and Lady Diana chose a set, with Rothschild décor, for her wedding. In 2013, Hungary presented a Herend porcelain set as official gift to the newborn British Crown Prince George.
Apart from the House of Windsor, several generations of royals across the world have become proud owners of the Hungarian porcelain, such as the emperor of Japan, the sultan of Brunei and the sultan of Oman.
Fashionable and Popular for Over 160 YearsSeveral new, contemporary variations have been created as a reworking of the Victoria pattern. They all correspond to the taste of their times and are dressed in new colours, combining the marks of tradition and innovation in equal measure. In 2011, to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the Victoria pattern, many new versions were added to the collection. This year, for the
200th birthday of the grandmother of Europe, Herend developed a limited edition tea set named: “Crown of Victoria” (see the above picture).
The secret of the Hungarian manufactory’s success is inherent to the inimitable grace and elegance of its porcelain. As the decades passed, it has constantly been attracting honourable customers. Today, Herend's hand-painted products are exported to over 60 countries. The Al Mazroui Group is currently planning on opening the first boutique in the Arab world. It will be the ideal place to find a large selection of luxury porcelain pieces and sets, each of which is a unique objet d’art that will leave your guests in awe.
