“
The worst thing in the world is to try to sleep and not to.” Do you agree with Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald? If so, here are some tips, recommended by the UK-based Sleep Council, to create the perfect sleep environment for you or your guests.
Chill! The room temperature should always be over 12°C and shouldn’t exceed 24°C. If the weather allows it, let the windows open for cool air circulation. However, note that young children and elderly people may require a slightly warmer environment.
Relax! A bedroom is a peaceful haven. A warm bubble bath with lavender or geranium oils, herbal teas, a good book or yoga will put even the more stressed ones in the right mood for a good night rest. Remember to use a dimmer light, if you want to read in bed.
Turn off the lights! When it’s dark, the body releases melatonin, which helps to leave for Dreamland. To avoid being awoken by the early morning sun, blackout blinds or an eye mask might be useful. An alarm clock with handy light settings which dim slowly can also help to drift off.
Unplug! The bedroom should be free of all technological devices. Indeed, beeps, buzzes and even the tiniest standby lights can ruin the body’s circadian rhythm. Mobile phones and computer screens should be the firsts to go as they glow with blue light, which inhibits the release of melatonin.
Hush! Loud noises can make it difficult to sleep. Double glazed windows will dull sound from outside and wearing earplugs might help to. However, soft and steady sounds such as ‘white noise’ tapes can be very soothing and contribute to a sound sleep.
Of course,
the bed remains the most significant element to create the ideal sleep environment. Since different beds suit different bodies, the best mattress offers the correct support depending on one’s weight and build. Moreover, when asleep it is recommended to maintain a good posture. A mattress too soft will cause people to slouch, while one that is too firm can apply pressure to hips and shoulders. According to the National Sleep Foundation, an American organisation, “
a good rule of thumb is to shop around, test out the product and always make sure the mattress you purchase is comfortable and supportive.”
