What is Sustained Casing Pressure?

Sustained Casing Pressure (SCP), also called Sustained Annulus Pressure or Casing-Casing Annulus, is an excessive casing pressure in wells which persistently rebuilds after bleed off. It is caused by gas migration from a high-pressured subsurface formation, through the leaking cement sheath in one of the well’s casing annuli. It may also be caused by defect and leaking tubing connections, downhole accessories or wellhead seals and the degradation or failure of well barriers. It manifests itself at the wellhead as irreducible casing pressure. This issue might result in the loss of containment with environmental and material damages or even production and human losses.

SCP can occur throughout a well’s lifetime and means that a well’s barrier is comprised, jeopardising its integrity.

Wellcem’s resin-based sealing solutions are particularly suitable for leaks in difficult-to-reach places or when other methods would be too expensive or not technically possible. The sealing material is permanent and robust and can only be removed by mechanical means. It withstands all normal well fluids, mechanical shocks, as well as temperature and pressure changes in the well.
